MOTORCYCLE CIRCUIT CHANGING DIRECTION Gulfport's Josh Hayes sees major mods as racing arm changes ownership By STEVE WILSON It's not how hard you fall, but how fast you get up. In the world of superbikes and even more super riders, such an adage is more than a watchword. It's a way of life. Gulfport's Josh Hayes has become a fixture on the American Motorcyclist ***ociation circuit, racing in the AMA Supersport Championship and the AMA Formula Xtreme cl***es. But with a whole raft of changes headed for the AMA's racing arm, Hayes faces an uncertain future. At first it appeared the local racer was headed for another championship coronation. On March 8, Hayes had reached the pinnacle of his profession, winning the series' most prestigious single race, the grueling Daytona 200, a 68-lap, 200-mile race held annually at the Daytona International Speedway. But after a technical inspection of his Erion Racing Honda CBR600RR, he was disqualified, which gave the win to the second-place rider. The AMA said in a release, "the crankshaft was polished, surface treated and metal was removed from it" in violation of the Formula Xtreme rulebook. Honda appealed the decision, to no avail. Hayes became the first racer in the history of the event to be disqualified. "The AMA brought in some new guy who was going to be chopping heads," Hayes said of the technical inspector and his staff, all new personnel. "If it would have been a performance advantage worth a quarter-second a lap, I would have taken it. But it wasn't a performance advantage. The punishment should have fit the crime." Another team, with a similar crankshaft infraction, was hit was a $2,000 fine. Since that race Hayes endured a tough day at Barber Motorsports Park on April 20 and 21, when he crashed in the Formula Xtreme race, dropped back in the pack and raced hard to a seventh-place finish. In Supersport he qualified badly and finished seventh. At Fontana, Calif., April 26-27, Hayes got back into the groove, finishing second in the Formula Xtreme race and fourth in the Supersport event. But racing is not all that is on Hayes' plate these days. The AMA's racing arm has been bought out by the Daytona Motorsports Group, headed by NASCAR's first family, the Frances. With a decreased emphasis on the manufacturer's adage of "win on Sunday, sell on Monday," and an increased focus on creating a great racing show similar to NASCAR, Hayes believes the sport is facing some seriously rough waters. "It's absolutely crazy," Hayes said. "Next year, racing in the U.S. is going to be completely different. They want it to be a better show, like NASCAR, where 10 guys at any race can win. They're hoping that gets some of the NASCAR crowd to watch. But motorcycle racing draws a different crowd, techie geeks who argue about it on message boards. They're hardcore." |
